Damian Jacob Sendler reviews the latest news. A group of scientists from the Silesian University of Technology has established the CIRCA internet system to support COVID-19 imaging diagnostics. The analysis is carried out based on the x-rays of the patients’ lungs.
The task was implemented in cooperation with the Polish Medical Society of Radiology and with over a dozen universities and medical institutions from all over Poland. The database, based on which the IT system acknowledges COVID-19, was produced based on over 1.2 thousand X-rays of the lungs of patients.
The CIRCA web system is to support and accelerate COVID-19 imaging diagnostics in hospital emergency departments (SOR), helping with the initial evaluation of the nature of changes in the lung region of patients with respiratory conditions. It was developed by a team headed by the dean of the Faculty of Automatic Control, Electronics and Computer Science of the Silesian University of Technology prof. Dr. hab. Eng. Joanna Polańska.
“Because illness symptoms at an early stage of pneumonia and COVID-19 are mostly extremely comparable, there has been a need to develop a tool for non-radiologists that could assure them that this image they got in an X-ray scan is a picture of advancement health problem towards COVID-19 “- discussed prof. Joanna Polańska.
“We utilize the expert system, machine learning. We reveal examples and identify: they are healthy lungs, they are lungs with pneumonia, they are COVID lungs. The program examines the image of the smallest particles. Through a detailed analysis of many models, it can extract the characteristic functions, i.e., the so-called radial signature of each illness entity, including COVID-19 “- included prof. J. Polańska.
Presently, CIRCA serves to distinguish three necessary conditions: the picture without sores (healthy lungs), with changes particular of pneumonia in COVID-19, and with modifications characteristic of other inflammatory diseases of the lungs – viral and bacterial.
The computational engine developed in the Python ™ environment has been coupled to the web portal, therefore making it possible for the system to be used online by multiple users all at once. Analysis of images utilizing a publicly offered and free mode does not require registration.
“Registering only needs the desire to share pictures. We require to understand who uploaded the pictures and make sure that it is a hospital unit because such an image is packed with diagnostic information. It is entirely anonymous. However, it contains details about the medical diagnosis for this patient. This should be validated by medical professionals “- discusses prof. Polańska.
As part of the task, a nationwide PolCOVID image database will be produced, which will allow for extensive retrospective analysis of tens of thousands of X-ray images. It will make it possible for the development of comprehensive diagnostic guidelines for clinicians and recognition of the COVID-19 radial signature at various phases of development. In the future, thanks to the detailed analysis of data collected during the epidemic, supported by the verification of the radiological specialist viewpoints provided on an ongoing basis, it will be possible to identify the radiometric features and ranges of their variability quality of COVID-19.
The job, implemented in cooperation with the Polish Medical Society of Radiology headed by prof. Andrzej Cieszanowski, a lots approximately units in the country got included: Silesian Medical University, Medical University of Bialystok, Warsaw Medical University, Medical University of Lodz, Medical University of Gdansk, University of Rzeszów, Medical Center in Łańcut, the Medical University of Piastów Śląskich in Wrocław, Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń, Collegium Medicum in Bydgoszcz, Medical Center of Postgraduate Education in Warsaw, Provincial Specialist Hospital in Wrocław, University Clinical Hospital in Opole, Provincial Combined Hospital in Kielce, Silesian Hospital in Cieszyn and Monimonial Infective Hospital Megrez in Tychy.
The project, recognized as key in the application of the state’s clinical policy in the battle against COVID-19, got 600,000. PLN co-financing from the Ministry of Science and Higher Education. In addition to work on the CIRCA service, further activities in the field of avoidance or diagnosis of COVID-19 are carried out at the Faculty of Automatic Control, Electronics, and Computer Science. Researchers are working on the list below jobs: Cornelia, evaluating neurological modifications, and The Code, which examines danger aspects for COVID-19 problems.
The CIRCA internet system is to support and speed up COVID-19 imaging diagnostics in hospital emergency departments (SOR), assisting in the preliminary evaluation of the nature of changes in the lung area of clients with respiratory conditions. It was developed by a team headed by the dean of the Faculty of Automatic Control, Electronics and Computer Science of the Silesian University of Technology prof. Dr. hab. Through an incredibly in-depth analysis of lots of images it can extract the characteristic features, i.e., the so-called radial signature of each illness entity, consisting of COVID-19 “- added prof. J. Polańska.
In the future, thanks to the detailed analysis of information gathered during the epidemic, supported by the verification of the radiological specialist opinions provided on an ongoing basis, it will be possible to figure out the radiometric features and ranges of their irregularity attribute of COVID-19.
In addition to work on the CIRCA service, more activities in the field of prevention or diagnosis of COVID-19 are carried out at the Faculty of Automatic Control, Electronics, and Computer Science.
